On December 21, 2012, a rare astronomical and Mayan mythical event occurs. The Sun conjuncts the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic. The Milky Way extends in a general north-south direction in the night sky. The plane of the ecliptic is the track that the Sun, Moon, planets and stars appear to travel in the sky, from east to west. Because of this extremely rare event and the last date recorded on the Mayan calendar being the same date, people have long predicted events happening on that date, up to and including the end of the human race! Many scientists propose that the Mayan calendar ends on that date because On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years, fulfilling the purpose of the calendar in predicting this rare occurrence. There are many that see the Comet Elenin arriving approximately one year before as a harbinger of the cataclysmic events supposed to happen in 2012. Or, even more sinister, as a catalysis that will start a chain reaction of world disasters (earthquakes, volcanic activity, storms of epic proportion, a change in the axis of the Earth, and so on) Citing the alignment of the planets to the Milky Way at the same time that a new comet comes through the asteroid belt to pass near Earth as the cause of adding the the gravitational or magnetic effects caused by the alignment. Or perhaps causing the defection of a few meteors to head on a collision course, hitting the Earth and starting such a chain reaction. Most people think of the ecology of the Earth is Stable and rugged, but it is really not. So many factors have to be perfect to sustain life on this planet. An increased wobble on the Earth's axis, a slight shift in the Earth's core rotation, a temperature change of 15 degrees or more , all would spell disaster for the life on the planet.

On the other side of scientific belief, and conjecture. This well known Mayan calendar is just one of many that the Maya kept. It is know as the long count calendar which is reset to day 0 every 1,872,000 days, a period known as The Great Circle (Diamond 2005: 167). The next reset date, by some calculations, is December 21, 2012. That would explain why it stops on that date. The Sun and Earth do line up to the center of the Milky way on the winter solstice (December 21), but this happens every year, every winter solstice. The Earth has passed through many comet tails with no ill effects, however there have been documented major earthquakes during some of these times. Coincidence? A change in the gravitational or magnetic pull on the Earth? So far, it seems that Comet Elenin has no relationship to the great 2012 prediction. R. Singleton
